She's officially off to school now. The clothes, the shoes, the laptop, and the bunnies all climbed into the minivan (well, with a little help) and moved to the college apartment. Yes, I'll miss her. I'll also miss the humor in watching my almost-grown-up daughter solve her own day-to-day problems like -- the phone!
She doesn't use a landline at school. When she's home, she lives mainly on her cell phone as well. The only problem is that our house is a dead zone for cell phones. It'll ring, but then she can't answer it in the house. She solved this problem by spending much of the summer in the backyard. But in the backyard there are mosquitoes and bees and the occasional wasp! Her solution: phone in one hand, stick in the other.
If it rains or the mosquitoes get too bad, she gives up and stands in the doorway. This doesn't work as well, but she can at least get a text message off.
Yes, they're entertaining, our college kiddos. I hope she approaches her schoolwork with the same creativity and energy that she does the phone.
it's fun to watch them figure it out for themselves.
but it's difficult to let them :-)

I keep wanting to give her advice; I've gotten better at handling this, only sending her advice when she needs it.
