Oh, Laura, I hear you. The fears (we are novelists after all, as you say. We're supposed to think up all sorts of scary scenarios!) and the sense of needing to be needed. And that amazing feeling of watching your chicks try out their wings and, gulp, soar.

Good job, Mom. And rest assured, they'll still need you. And not just for money.

I think the nurturing instinct is vastly underrated. It's good to need that sort of connection with people; and hopefully you'll have a bunch of grandkids someday to shower all that love on.

You mean I wasn't the only Mom who wanted to hand the baby back to the nurse and say, "There must be some mistake! I'm not ready."

Judy, I can't tell you the terrors I had from the day I first knew I was pregnant. None have come true, fortunately. But the money thing is at least predictable--and I don't mind as long as it's not for bail!

sc-From your mouth to God's ear! (Not too soon, though!)

Nina-Ha! No, you weren't. We felt like criminals! And now there's no way they'll take her back.

Just think of your freedom - to demand rides from your teen! Hubby and I have taken FULL advantage of a free, on demand taxi service from both our children - and will do so until DD leaves for college this Fall - then it's back to rock paper scissors to decide who drives, and who has the martini/beer!!!
The best part is - they can't say no! You just remind them of all the rides they got from you, and who is paying for the car/gas/insurance!!
ENJOY!!

Brilliant, Emma! I hadn't thought of that!

I'm okay as long as I can't physically see my son driving. Out of sight, out of mind (and I can't hear any sirens). I CANNOT follow behind him in my car. If I can see him, I am sure he is going to wreck. :)

You, Laura, are a very sweet and tender-hearted mommy. You've earned your sweet and vibrant daughter.

These days, with us not having a family car, the only time I've been in a vehicle with one of my children was when my eldest (she's 22) was driving me. I agree with Emma: having a child-chauffeur has its perks! Milk them for all they're work!

I like the chauffeur idea! And kudos to you on letting her spread a bit farther out.

Only note - bell hooks prefers that her name not be capitalized.
